The volume of biomedical information that is available – from published research papers to raw DNA/RNA sequencing data – is already overwhelming and new information is being added at an exponential rate. This vast quantity of data has already led to the founding of a new scientific field (bioinformatics), and a logical next step is to apply artificial intelligence (AI) and the power of supercomputing to help analyze the data. The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative has acquired a startup – Meta – that is developing an easy-to-use platform that uses the power of AI to sift through this data, and the platform will be freely available to the general public. Excellent news for all citizen-scientists!
