Social media is flooded with news about how important it is to maintain healthy gut bacteria (also known as the microbiome). Not surprisingly, most of this “news” is also aimed at consumers, with the goal of selling probiotics and prebiotics (some of which are quite expensive) to alleviate or cure a whole variety of maladies. But understand that this field is still in its infancy, and ultimately we will discover that most of these products provide little to no benefit, and in some cases they may actually be harmful. However, the future is bright: very important research is being conducted on the link between the microbiome and human health and there is no question that the second generation of probiotics and prebiotics will provide real benefit.

Here is a nice summary of current research into the link between the microbiome and neurological disorders.
